Your nervous system isn't literally stuck. However, prolonged strain can make it more difficult to fully switch back to rest and recovery.
What is meant by the stress mode?
The term stress mode is not a medical diagnosis. We mean by it that the body remains alert and activated, even when the immediate busyness has passed.
The sympathetic part of your autonomic nervous system supports activity and exertion. The parasympathetic part plays an important role in relaxation and recovery. Both systems work together continuously.
When activity and recovery are well balanced, your body can unwind after a stressful moment. When stressful moments continue to follow one another, that recovery can lag behind.
Why does downshifting sometimes not work properly?
Several factors can play a role in this:
- prolonged work or personal pressure;
- be constantly available;
- poor or restless sleep;
- worry a lot;
- too few recovery moments;
- regularly exceeding your capacity;
- Exercising intensively while not recovering sufficiently.
Often, it is not a matter of one major stressful event, but rather an accumulation of strain. As a result, your body has less and less opportunity to fully recover.
Which signs can you recognize?
A body that has little room to recover can give signals such as:
- tired are despite sufficient sleep;
- a rushed or hurried feeling;
- an increased heart rate;
- rapid or shallow breathing;
- tension in neck, shoulders or jaw;
- headache;
- become overstimulated more quickly;
- recovering poorly after work or exertion.

You can therefore feel tired even while doing little physical activity. Low activity does not automatically mean that your body is recovering physiologically. When you continue to worry, remain alert, or breathe tensely, your body may still be activated.
These symptoms can also have other causes. Have them assessed if they persist, worsen, or limit your daily functioning.
Is taking more rest sufficient?
Simply resting is not always enough. Recovery also does not mean that you have to stop moving completely or avoid all your activities.
Appropriate exercise can support recovery. Training too hard can actually be too much when capacity is reduced. Therefore, it is not about training harder, but about loading smarter and recovering sufficiently from every training stimulus.
Inside Fysi Balance We work with the BioCheck methodology. This combines daily measurements with targeted training, breathing exercises, education, and personal guidance. This provides insight into your current load capacity and the influence of factors such as exercise, sleep, and daily stress on your recovery.
Can you measure whether your body is recovering sufficiently?
Of Fysi Balance we provide objective insight into the recovery capacity. We start with a physiotherapeutic intake and a 12-minute RMSSD recovery measurement.
The measurement provides insight into how your autonomic nervous system handles stress and recovery at that moment. It is not a diagnosis, and you do not automatically start a program.
Is your recovery capacity sufficient? In that case, the measurement primarily provides confirmation and insight. Is your recovery capacity reduced? Then we will discuss whether targeted guidance would be beneficial.
Does your body have trouble relaxing?
