What is dry needling?
Dry needling is a special technique in which a painful muscle is punctured with a needle, which quickly causes relaxation in the muscle. A 'dry' needle is used, which means that no fluid is injected into the muscle. Dry needling treats so-called trigger points. Trigger points, also called muscle knots, are places in your muscles that feel tighter or painful. By specifically puncturing these trigger points, the muscle will relax.
Dry needling: painful or not?
Many people wonder whether dry needling is painful or not. In principle, the puncturing of the muscle is painless, although of course everyone can experience this differently. By briefly puncturing the so-called trigger points, you can experience a brief cramp feeling, after which the muscle will relax. Patients often experience a tired feeling in the muscle in question after puncturing. This is usually short-lived.
When to use dry needling and when not?

A dry needling treatment can be part of this. Dry needling can help with, among other things:
Dry needling is discouraged in cases of blood clotting disorders, fear of needles, previous heart valve surgery, bacterial endocarditis, lymphedema, or removed lymph nodes. It is also avoided during the first three months of pregnancy.
