In this blog we explain the difference between a partial and total knee prosthesis and which option best suits your situation.

If you suffer from serious knee problems, a knee prosthesis may be a solution. But if you choose a partial or total knee prosthesis? What exactly is the difference, and which option is best suited to your situation? In this blog, we explain what both procedures entail, when to choose which prosthesis, and how physiotherapy can help you recover well.

What is a knee prosthesis and what types are there?

A knee replacement replaces damaged cartilage in the knee and helps to reduce pain and improve mobility. There are different types of knee replacements:

  • Half knee prosthesis (unicondylar knee prosthesis) โ€“ Replaces only one side of the knee, often the inner side.
  • Total knee replacement (TKA) โ€“ Replaces both the inside and outside of the knee joint.

Which prosthesis is most suitable depends on the degree of wear and the location of the complaints.

Difference between a partial and total knee replacement

The main difference between a semi- and total knee prosthesis is the extent of the intervention:

Half knee prosthesis

โœ” Suitable if only one side of the knee is worn out.
โœ” Less invasive surgery, because a large part of the knee is preserved.
โœ” Shorter rehabilitation and faster recovery.
โœ” More natural feeling in the knee after recovery.

Total knee replacement

โœ” Necessary if the wear and tear is in the entire knee.
โœ” Major surgery in which the entire knee joint is replaced.
โœ” Suitable for severe osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
โœ” Longer rehabilitation, but often provides long-term pain relief.

When do you choose a partial or total knee prosthesis?

A half knee prosthesis is often chosen when only one side of the knee is worn out and the rest of the joint is still in good condition. This is more common in younger, active patients.

A total knee prosthesis is the best choice when the wear or damage is spread over the entire knee. This is more common with advanced osteoarthritis or other conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

The orthopedic surgeon will determine which option is most suitable based on an MRI, X-rays and your complaints.

Recovery and physiotherapy after a knee prosthesis

After a knee replacement, physical therapy is essential for a good recovery. The first few weeks after the operation are focused on reducing pain and swelling and improving mobility. After that, treatment focuses on:

  • Muscle strengthening: To support the knee and improve stability.
  • Running training: To regain a natural walking pattern.
  • Mobility exercises: To increase the mobility of the knee.
