Upper back pain is extremely annoying and can cause various physical complaints. It is important to treat the upper back with the right treatment. Upper back pain is less common than lower back pain, but can certainly be prevented. There is a good chance that your movement will be limited by this pain. Breathing is accompanied by pain, you can no longer exercise and you suffer more from headaches/migraines. This is unpleasant. Time for a visit to the physio. Our physiotherapist explains the possible treatments for upper back pain.

What is upper back pain and what are the causes?

Upper back pain consists of pain in the upper back. You often feel the pain between your shoulder blades, but you can also experience complaints near your ribs or under your neck. An incorrect (working) posture or one-sided use of your arms, for example, can gradually lead to high back pain. The pain can also radiate to the arms, chest or neck and you may therefore suffer from headaches more often. A paracetamol or other painkiller can partially (and only temporarily) relieve the pain. With targeted treatment it is possible to make upper back pain disappear completely.

Dry needling works for upper back pain

A special treatment for upper back pain is: dry needling. With this method, one of our physiotherapists punctures the painful muscle(s) with a needle. This is done quickly so that the back muscles relax. Sometimes a muscle cramps briefly when punctured, which can feel unpleasant. Muscles also often feel very tired. Don't worry, because that will be short-lived. Before the physiotherapist punctures the muscle(s), you will be carefully examined. Dry needling is part of your personal development plan and only the muscles that cause the painful physical complaints are injected.

Manual therapy as a treatment for high back pain

We also offer manual therapy in our practices. This is a treatment for upper back pain in which 'manipulations' – or cracking of the spine – play an important role. Naturally, our manual therapist first makes a thorough diagnosis. This way, the cause of your upper back pain can be treated. After the manipulations, you can often move a lot better, other consequences of the pain decrease and, most importantly, the pain itself decreases significantly.

This means that you can move comfortably again after just a few treatments and even exercising is no longer a difficult task. Sounds too good to be true now that you are experiencing so much pain? It's not thanks to our physiotherapists!
